Licensing and Certification

Propane is a flammable gas that is sometimes generically referred to as LP Gas, LPG, or Liquefied Petroleum Gas. Propane gas can be found in a wide variety of industrial, commercial, and residential settings. As a fuel source, propane can be found in homes, in the workplace, in bulk transportation such as cargo tank trucks or rail cars, and as a fuel for motor vehicles.

Licensing Concerns

  • Class I: A licensed dealer who is engaged in the business of installing gas appliances or systems for the use of LPG and who sells, fills, refills, delivers, or is permitted to deliver any LPG.
  • Class II: A business engaged in the sale, transportation, and exchange of cylinders, but not transporting or transferring gas in liquid.
  • Class III: A business not engaged in the sale of LPG, but engaged in the sale and installation of gas appliances, or LPG systems.
  • Class IV: Those businesses listed below:
    • Sale of containers greater than 96 pounds water capacity.
    • Other LPG businesses not listed above.

Code Books & Application Requirements

The current Code Books, as of 2023, can be found below.

An application for the original or renewal license shall be made on forms provided by the SFM. The application for a license to engage in the business of LPG shall be accompanied by proof of public liability insurance.

Insurance Coverage Requirements: Public liability insurance shall be issued by a public liability insurance carrier showing coverage of at least $1,000,000 for each incident, and $2,000,000 in total coverage.

Following receipt of the properly completed application, an inspection, and compliance with the provision of the statute and these rules, our office shall issue a license. Original licenses shall be valid for one year from the date of issuance.

The digital credential can quickly be verified without requiring internet connectivity and provides proof of credential. A screenshot doesn't allow for the same security mechanisms that the official wallet pass provides.

Why can’t I just take a screenshot of my PDF?

The digital credential in your wallet can be verified quickly without internet connectivity. It also includes an additional security mechanism that allows us to validate that the credential has not been altered or doctored, which a screenshot cannot do.

What do I do if I get a new phone or my phone is lost/stolen?

If you get a new device, simply reopen the original email sent to you and click the "Add to Wallet" link to download the credential to your new device.

Using the Credential

How will a fire marshal or employer verify my digital LP Gas credential?

Enforcement personnel will use a verifier application to scan the QR code on your digital credential. This works without internet access and does not create additional tracking of your personal data.

Does my digital credential work when I don’t have cell service?

Yes, your digital credential can be verified without internet connectivity or cellular service.

Do I also need to carry a printed version of the PDF certificate with me?

No, the digital LP Gas credential serves in lieu of a physical certification card.

Will this increase the number of inspections by fire marshals?

No. Our objective is to speed up the certification process and make it easier for officials to verify your status.

Other Information

What does the State Fire Marshal do with my data?

Your data is anonymized and analyzed only in aggregate, in accordance with the State of Utah Privacy Policy.

Is my location tracked when I use my digital credential?

No. The verification happens directly between devices and does not "ping" a centralized server to track your location or information.

How do I renew my credential?

The process remains the same: credentials are renewed annually when your employer renews their license. Additionally, every holder is required to take a renewal exam every five years.
