Fire departments and inspectors should use this interactive checklist to conduct school inspections. This form should be updated by your department, but feel free to use it as a jumping off point.

Have any building spaces changed since last inspection?
EXITWAYS
1. Exterior exit doors serving occupant load > 50 equipped with panic hardware?

3. Fire rated doors closed (not wedged/blocked open)? (Magnets ok)

4. All required exit signs visible and operational?

5. Emergency lighting system works and has been tested? (Tested and logged)

6. Corridors, stairways, and exits free of storage/furniture/obstructions?

FIRE PROTECTION EQUIPMENT & ACCESS
1. Sufficient access to school on all weather roads?

2. Fire hydrants accessible and spaced for reasonable access?

3. Fire alarm system in proper working condition?
Ref: IFC
4. Did you test the fire alarm system?
Ref: IFC
5. Sufficient fire extinguishers (tagged annually, max travel distance 75ft)?

6. Automatic fire sprinkler heads clean and unobstructed?
Ref: IFC
7. Sprinkler valves open and riser gauges show design pressure?

8. Sprinkler system quarterly tested and log on site?

9. Kitchen hood suppression system has current inspection tag?

10. Hood fire suppression system is a UL 300 listed system?

ELECTRICAL
1. All exposed wiring/junction boxes/appliances properly secured and safe?

2. Approved (UL/FM) multiplug adapters in use? (No extension cords)

3. Electrical outlet boxes checked for arcing or breakage?

4. All circuits breakers free of tape and properly marked?

STORAGE
1. Spaces below stairways/ramps free of storage?

2. Chemicals/HazMat stored in separate room or rated cabinet?

3. Approved safety containers used for all flammable liquids?

4. Oily rags and waste stored in metal containers with lids?
Ref: IFC
BOILERS, SHOPS & FIRE DRILLS
1. Rated doors to boiler/furnace rooms compliant?
